Biology Exam Prep- Brian Kim

This upcoming week, I have to study for 2 exams. First in Biology 123 on monday and MAT222 on thursday. Since my bio exam is on monday I decided to blog on my biology prep. In order to begin this preparation, I decided to use the D's Due and Do Organizer strategy. Our professor provides us the powerpoint lecture slides on black board so I figured, if I set dates on each lecture slides to go through I'll be forced to study early on for my exam. Looking at back into my syllabus, I noticed that each week, we went through two chapters a week. So I decided each day starting thursday the 10th, I will go through two chapters of slides. So far I was able to keep up studying each day and I have one more section to go through and review the materials before I take the exam on monday night. This strategy seems to be really working for me because I usually procrastinate a lot when it comes to exams but now I feel like I am ahead of the game. There will be no more late night studying if I can keep up with this strategy and I will most likely use this again.
Now when I was studying the slides and the materials, I tested my attention span for a little bit. I noticed that after looking through the materials for about 10-15 minutes I zoned out. So, I thought the 10 minute technique would be perfect for me. So during the 10 minute period, I was able to focus on the materials and even seemed like I was able to go to more materials and memorize them. Right before the 10minute mark ended I jotted down couple things that I could not really remember onto an index card and post it notes so that I can later review them. At times I took several short breaks in between the 10minute period but other times I even went over to my friend's room to just relax for awhile. However I never knew that just studying for a 10minute interval would be so effective. I feel confident in the materials I have gone through and hoping for a great result on this exam.

One on the top are my notecards and post it notes I made during my 10 minute technique and used during it. These were very helpful when I was finally done going through my own assignments each day I was able to use another 10 minutes to review these materials.

One on the bottom where the post it is on my planner shows my due dates of all the sections I had to go through each day. This became my checklist and something that I had to follow for couple days which really forced me to do them. It was a very helpful technique.

  1. Brian! I used D's Due and Do organizer as well! I am glad we used the same technique and seemed to work very well with both of us. And I see that you used the 10 munutes technique. I am a big procrastinator and when it comes down to like reviewing notes or previewing, it takes me lot of time because I always read school materials all at once. It takes me lot of time to read and it also do not help me gain as much as knowledge because of my lack of attention span. Next time, to save my time and gain clear knowledge, I would love to use 10 minute technique just like you to review and preview my notes. I enjoyed reading your blogg!

  2. I like how you seem to have united the 20 minute technique with the Do and Due organizer. I think I might do something similar because I often don't have time to study my notes right after my class, so setting up a study schedule with due dates seems very effective.

  3. Nice, Brian. I was always thinking about making notecards when I was taking Bio last semester but failed to do it. Since memorizing is very important in bio, notecards are very useful. I think the 10-minute technique with notecards will work well.

  4. Well organized. Simple and effective to use notecards. I should try the same thing as well!
