As we go into this week's topic of Exam Experiment we learned about special note taking strategies. A lot of these strategies make sure that you take good notes during class and makes you review outside of class. Many times, as we write down our notes really fast during class, we may miss something or write down something we might not understand if we take a look at it later wen we study for our exams or quizzes.
This thursday, I had a human sexuality exam and there were a lot of notes from the review sessions and from my own studying sessions. What I decided to do after the review session was to use the SU/Cornell note taking strategy to help me look into my notes more and fully understand what is going on. SU/Cornell note taking strategy lets you take notes during class like you would for any other note taking strategies. However what you do after class is the most effective part of it. Either on a separate column or on a page right next to the page you took notes you write short summaries of the notes you took. This way, it will help you point out the important parts of the notes and later when you look into your notes you wouldn't be confused. Often people will never look into their notes because their own notes are not sufficient enough or they just don't know if all the important notes are in there for them to use.
The SU/Cornell notes allows you to have a sufficient stack of notes because you are pretty much "editing" your class notes. You may add to your notes, fill in some missing notes, and even summarize some notes. That allows you to have a solid note to look at later on.
For my Human Sexuality midterm, I had notes but since we only meet once a week there is not much to look into. So then for last weeks review lecture, I took as much notes as possible and I used the 20minute test prep to go through the notes i took. Because I am a kinesthetic learner, I cannot really look at a messy hand written note so I used my computer to organize my notes. This way, it is visually neat and organized well for me to follow. In my Notebook layout for word document, it allows me to divide up my notes into sections. However in one section I just typed up all my notes and on the next section, i wrote down short summaries or important notes so that I can first read through that when I go back to the notes.
This seemed to be very effective because i looked through my notes in order to study for my exam and I got a lot out of just by reviewing my notes.
I have also tried SU/Cornell notes just like you. I like how you screen shot your computer notes and documented it. It looks very neat. I enjoyed reading your blog and I am glad that SU/Cornell notes has also worked for you as well. Nice Blog!
