Unwoo TART

As this weekend topic is the ‘Reading’, I read CLS textbook, and tried to figure out which skill has a best shape for me. At the same time, I thought about my reading skill that I used past 20 years. In my opinion, I was not the best reader. However, I was not the worst too. When I was in the high school, I always skimmed the all chapter before I go to class. Because it was easy to me understood lecture and class material, reading before the class was best way that I prepared the class. The way that I used in the high school was not that bad for my grade. But my way works just for few classes in Syracuse university, which has a small amount of reading. Another classes that have tremendous reading such as ECN 301 isn’t work. It makes me hard to follow the every single lecture and class material. However, the reading skills that I learned from CLS books showed me another way to prepare the class. Which are TART (Terms, Attend, Read, and Test) and NSAS (No salts and sauce to guide me through my reading assignment). The reason I choose TART for my reading skill is that is really similar with my old reading skill that I used. It is also very useful for lecture-dependent class. It looks very familiar.

TART has a four different step, which are Term, Attend, Read, and Test.
First step, Term is the kind of skimming but not exactly same. You should open the book and find bold words. Most of them are important and key words for understanding chapter. You should carefully read or note. So, you could understand those words perfectly.
Second step, you should attend the class for better understanding. Take a note as usual in class. After class, you should re-read your note.
Third step, reading your text books is most important step. You should not use everything in your textbook. You should read books as follow what you read and note before.
Final step, making test what you read throughout all steps is kind a self review session for better reader.
I tried to imply TART to my ECN 301. As following the instructor, I tried to find key words for better understanding. I used a book and power-point. It seems most important terms are in the power- point. As I am kinesthetic leaner, I used my note book and note card for better understanding and quick learning.
After I understanding and memorizing those words, I attended the class for note taking. At this point, I used Cornell/SU note for better review.
After taking note and review all the material I should read, I opened the book and started to read. I could get a point that I should focus. It is really easy to read.
After I read I think I understand most of things that I should know, i think I could make one full test for chapter that I read. For all three steps, It was great experience. Making test can be very good to review the material. However, for me, it is really does not work very well. I think it is just waste of time. So, I just review all my work again and again. I think repeating works better for me.

  1. Seems like many of you guys used TART as this week's strategy. I thought of using it, too but X Minute was a better strategy for me to use my ENL 211 class because this class has most reading assignments. It seems like TART worked well for the others but you. Some of the strategies do not work well with some of you. It is still a great experience to try many strategies. Good blog.

  2. I used the same strategy as you and for me it was great because it allowed me to pay attention a lot more in class. Pretty much, its only a matter of how much work you put in before class and after class and the end result should be great.

  3. I also used TART as my strategy for my classes. it is good to see the TART worked out well for you. I am surprised to know that you still used TART for econ even though you have power point slides. I agree with brian; its only a matter of how you work and what result you get.

  4. I also used TART as one of my stradegy and I also applied it to my ECN class as well. However for a strong kinesthetic learner myself, I used NSAS and it seemed like that stradegy worked for me better than TART. TART was a good technique but was too dull for me. Where NSAS was something that I actually really liked to do. Nice blog!
